Shen Dali, our guest speaker for this session, brings his profound expertise in the French language and a wealth of references to shed light on the challenges of translating Dream of the Red Chamber and some of the regrets found in existing French translations. At the invitation of the publisher of the French illustrated edition of Dream of the Red Chamber in Paris, Shen Dali retranslated the novel’s epilogue, The Song of the End. In his translation, he carefully adhered to the rhythmic structure of French poetry, aiming to "preserve the essence over the form," transforming it into a piece of verse.
